Rua Paul's
four metre high archway spans the Water Street entrance to
Forum North. It was one of three works, along with Graeme
North's ARFT and Clive Williams' 'Stand Together' commissioned
for the opening of Forum North.
The work
is made up of steel reinforced concrete in two halves. In
each half the concrete was formed in convex moulds so that
the outside of the arch takes on the mould's smooth surface
and the inside shows Maori motifs, hand formed and trowelled
into the concrete as it was applied. The two halves were joined
on site to form the completed arch, then given a final coat
of plaster and red stain.
Rua
Paul now works from his studio gallery in Christchurch. His
recent
work as an artist has taken a new direction -- now painting
in acrylics.
