This bright cheerful rainbow arch spans one of the walkways in Tarewa Park. On close inspection the mosaic that covers the arch reveals a myriad of wonderful glazed images. Janet's stated objectives with the project were to involve the community, stimulate and educate children and reflect the ethnic components of the Whangarei community. This is a project where many children benefited directly from Janet's time as they modelled the clay and worked with glazes, where art was in the experience as much as in the end product. Once again (and it is a recurring theme in this overview of our city's art), the artist's commitment was huge and generous. It extended to fulfil the artistic vision, not limited by the normal concerns of commerce. But does this come to be expected? The arch was completed in 1991 and today stands in the park in some ways like the wonderful dream entry to something not yet there.
