Based
on the sails of the ocean going Waka's that brought the first
peoples to New Zealand, the sail becomes a universal metaphor
for the historical connections we have made with the sea. Today
the Town Basin hosts yachts from all over the world, as it has
done down through the years, the harbour also providing one
of the economic bases for the community. The sails construction,
one woven in copper and one in totara alludes to the richness
and inter-twinning of two cultures, referencing native flora,
industry and peoples.
