David worked extensively on drawings to develop the theme
and composition, including many hours of life-drawing studies.
The materials and techniques were quite original and had to
be developed through innovation and experiment. Even information
on Egyptian relief carving was assimilated. The Quarry environment
of the time seems to have been particularly alive with talent
and there was input from other artists also.
On a test wall David developed the carving techniques. He
experimented with wax resins combined with clay, oxides and
metallic pigments until satisfied that he had the media that
would withstand the elements.
The design was then transferred onto the wall and he began
carving, then plastering and sanding. The pigment sealers
were applied and then an inlay of paua shells and mother of
pearl became the eyes.
Finally, after about five months work, on 29/7/88 a dawn
blessing was held and the project was complete.
Now 14 years later, the integrity of David's experimental
methods and materials has stood the test of time.
