The Whangarei Art Museum is the public art museum for the city and district and the only public gallery in Northland. The art museum opened in a listed Category 2 Heritage "Arts & Crafts' building in Cafler Park in June 1996. Nearby are the cultural amenities of Forum North exhibition hall and theatre, public library, conservatory and fernery.

The art museum is the permanent home for the city art collection which embraces heritage and contemporary art work and several significant bequest collections.

Nationally recognised for the quality of its curatorship, the art museum is also the venue for touring and internally curated exhibitions - designed to showcase the full diversity of creative art practice in Northland and New Zealand. The art museum fulfils a broader role in researching and documenting the artists of the region, telling the story of the district through its permanent collection, publishing catalogues and a quarterly magazine, and the on-going involvement of schools and educational institutions. Its mission is to acknowledge, preserve and showcase the visual arts history of the region, with a focus on our place in the Pacific and bicultural heritage.

The Geoff Wilson Gallery is part of the Northland Polytechnic Tai Tokerau Wananga campus in Raumanga. The gallery is situated at the "top end" of the campus off State Highway One, south of Whangarei City (entrance off Murdoch Crescent).
The gallery was opened in 1990, and is named after the late Geoff Wilson, who was a founding tutor of the School of Applied Arts. The gallery remains a focus of the present degree programme in Applied Arts – Visual.

There are regular student and tutor exhibitions, as well as shows by local Northland artists. An exciting part of the exhibition programme in recent years has been curated shows featuring artists from throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Geoff Wilson Gallery is a member of Museums Aotearoa and is committed to the vibrant arts scene in Northland. We look forward to welcoming new and regular visitors to the gallery.
